This month I’m participating as a speaker in the Reach More Readers 9th Annual Book Marketing Conference Online, and I have to say, it’s more than a little intimidating. I look at the other speakers’ topics that on the surface sound similar to mine and think, “What am I doing here? They’re way more accomplished.” Do you ever do that? Compare your book to others? Or maybe you don’t even write your book, because you think, “Somebody’s already done that better than me anyway.”
To all that negativity, in your head and mine, I say, “STOP IT.” And here’s why.
You know the Dr. Seuss quote? “There is no one alive who is Youer than You.” You’re a unique person with a unique message. Yeah, yeah, yeah, you’ve heard it before, but think about it. No one, not even a twin, has the same experiences as you. The way they combine and the way you reacted to them makes you completely and utterly one-of-a-kind. Your book is your own special perspective on your chosen topic. As long as you let your own voice shine through, readers will appreciate what you have to say.
But there’s more to it than that.
If you were entirely unique, meaning you had absolutely no qualities or memories or experiences in common with anyone else, you would be incomprehensible to others. You’d be an alien being. In that respect, you’re like all the others of us on the planet. Even as you’re writing your book or blog post in your unique voice, remember to include evidence of commonalities experienced by everyone reading.
The unique aspects of your book endear you to readers, bringing you alive in their minds. The common aspects of your book make them nod and smile and say, “She understands me and what I’ve gone through.”
Unique and common. What a great combination!
